Stronger Together: Fund Raiser for Brain Cancer Research on behalf of Oligo Nation

Biotect Services is raising money and awareness for brain cancer research on behalf of Oligo Nation Foundation because we understand the urgency and the need for research to triumph over cancer. Like many people, our founder shares the pain of losing a loved one to an untreatable brain cancer. We were touched by the Greene’s family experience with oligodendroglioma (oligo) and their resolve to fight for a cure for their two sons and all oligo cancer patients. This is their story.

There is an estimated 1,217 people diagnosed with oligo each year with 11,757 people living with this tumor in the US today. Oligo is currently incurable, and in the absence of new treatments, life expectancy is 3-12 years, depending on the tumor grade. This is a brutal fact, and one that all of us hate to acknowledge, but it makes the need for curative research crystal clear.

Two primary sources of research funding are the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Brain Tumor Society (the largest foundation for brain cancer) from which 12% (~$12 million) and 22% (~$2 million) of total annual funds respectively are allocated to support brain cancer. Most of these funds support research for glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and aggressive brain tumor. Until Oligo Nation was founded, there was essentially no money going to oligo research and no new treatments had been tried on oligo patients for 20 years.

In spite of this, the potential for medical breakthroughs in oncology has never been greater due to new opportunities in fields like genetics and immunotherapy. Since 2016, Oligo Nation has raised $1.3 million and funded 18 research grants at leading institutions (Stanford, UCSF, Duke, MD Anderson, etc). More than 90% of their donated funds directly support research, compared to 5-25% of the bigger nonprofit foundations (NBTS, ABTA, ABC2, etc.). Grants are 100% focused on opportunities that can translate to clinical trials for oligo patients in the short-term.

Biotect Services has committed to helping Oligo Nation support brain cancer research by hosting their first fundraising event. We strongly believe that knowledge and therapeutic interventions tested for oligo will also raise opportunities for treating other types of brain cancer tumors. We are committed to raising money and awareness for oligo research and hope that you will join our cause, because we are “Stronger Together.” We are bringing people together locally to attend a fun afternoon of music and comedy, and reaching out to our vendors, CRO’s, clients, university colleagues, friends, and family who can’t attend, but still want to be a part of this important cause to help us raise $30,000. Brock Greene has sent a follow-up video to support this fundraiser.

The event is coming up quickly, but donations will continue to be collected through the end of October. Your donation can be made through a GoFundMe page or by check made payable to Oligo Nation and mailed to them (197 Tamal Vista Blvd, #204 Corte Madera, CA 94925) or mailed to Biotect Services, Inc. (2637 Midpoint Drive, Suite E, Fort Collins, CO 80525). Tax receipt letters for your donation will follow from Oligo Nation. Thank you in advance of your generous donation to help fund critical brain cancer research for Oligo Nation!
